About Tantra-zawadi

brooklyn, NY

Performance Poet and the author of "alifepoeminprogress" by Chuma Spirit Books, LLC.

My work can best be described as "the love that I make through my art to the vision of the unseen reality."

Poetry is the rhythm of life peering through the body for interpretation. It is breathing, walking, doing, loving and awakening. It is limitless in its ability to reach across genres and varying walks of life. Poetry is transforming. I create poems that expand boundaries through story telling, movement and breath. I have to write. Life calls herself “poetry.” From my first poem in grade school, I enjoyed painting pictures of my community through the written word. I wrote about, culture, music, family life, love and being a girl. My poetry didn’t always flow and it didn’t always rhyme. Sometimes it was broken and then sunny, laughing then crying; but it was always in the threads of my garments and in my teeth. Early on, I embraced wordsmiths such as Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, S. Pearl Sharp and Haki Madhubuti because they captured the essence of the human spirit with credibility. As for me, I will not rest until my work touches.

Tantra-zawadi is a member of Collective Spirits and kicked off 2009 with their "Love Planet EP" produced by Jonny Montana and Neil Maclean (Camio Recordings), showcasing Bennett Holland on keys, Tantra on poem and Dana Byrd on vocals (www.traxsource.com). Tantra is also a member of the vonduvoisdancecollective and appeared at the Badilisha Poetry X-Change Festival in Cape Town, South Africa in 2009.

Her spoken word video “Scarlet Waters” featuring Michael Cox on bass, was featured on the website for Product (RED) created by U2’s Bono and Bobby Shriver, to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS in Africa. Launchers of Product (RED include businesses such as Gap, Inc.., Converse, American Express, Apple, Inc., and Giorgio Armani. Tantra also filmed a public service announcement for BETAH Associates produced by Marc Herbert Productions aimed at promoting HIV/AIDS awareness through the art form spoken word as well as a performance video of her choreo-poem “Girl.” Her latest film is a short documentary "A Silent Genocide ~
A Brief Insight into HIV/AIDS" edited by Oliver Covrett @ www.youtube.com/tantrazawadi.

Tantra's recent spoken word collaborations available on cdbaby.com include: EARTHOLOGY by Floyd Boykin, Jr., and The Liberation Sessions - Soul of the City CD by Mwalim and Poetic Stimulus @ www.poeticstimulus.com.

Tantra has performed to standing-room audiences at venues in South Africa, Toronto, London and Germany while blowing audiences away with her soul stirring style of poetry in the tri-state area; performing original works in off-Broadway productions and venues such as: The Sugar Bar, Merce Cunningham Studios, Brooklyn Museum's First Saturday Project, Def Poetry Plugged In, hosted by Danny Simmons at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, BRIC Studios, Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Brooklyn NEXT!, Bryant Park, Union Square Park (Summer in the Square), Barnes & Noble, Trane Studios and Up From The Roots in Toronto, The Schomberg Library with Ruby Dee and Avery Brooks in attendance, The Harlem Book Fair, WOW Theater, 4WCircle of Art, Urban Erotika, The Guild Theater, The Triad Theater, The Cutting Room, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe and the Symphony Space (Riant Theatre’s Strawberry One-Act Festival). Tantra was honored by the Kings County District Attorney's Office during Women's History Month in 2001 for her artistic contributions to the borough of Brooklyn.

Tantra is the subject of a spoken word documentary “Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow” (which features poets who make a living from their art), by award winning filmmaker, Julia O’Farrow (www.jaygeeoh.com).
