About Ferris Wheel Songs

Cambridge, MA

I know Josh and Justine had been writing songs together in Josh's basement for a pretty long time. After a while, they asked me to add drum parts to some of their stuff. I'd heard some of the rough demos they'd done and I was honored to be a part of it, because it was well-written and unlike anything either of them had made before
So we get around to jamming and in summer of 2008, we spend the better part of two months just composing, arranging and recording songs, hoping to release a full-length by the fall. Unfortunately, we got sidetracked and things took way longer than we ever would have thought, then college rolled back around and we took a bit of a breather
Still slightly disillusioned with the summer's project, the three of us reconvened in September at Tufts and sought out ways to reinvigorate the songs and avoid being in another SMiLE or Chinese Democracy situation. When Josh and I were on our way to catch our respective subways back to BC and Emerson, we heard Shaheen practicing cello alone in a room across from ours and he sounded excellent. We decided to brazenly step in and ask him if he wanted to jam with us. To our surprise, he enthusiastically accepted our offer
So the next week, he showed up and, moreso than we'd hoped, his playing breathed life back into our songs. At that moment, "become a functional live band" climbed a little higher onto all of our to-do lists
So I got wind of a couple shows happening at Emerson and we scrambled to recruit the personnel to perform our songs. Joe had been following what we'd been doing for a while and was eager to become involved on guitar and banjo, while Justine had conveniently befriended Sawyer through her classes. Josh tapped Mike W. to cover on bass, and all of a sudden, our dream was within reach
So over the next few weeks, we practiced more than any of us ever had practiced in a band before in order to prepare for our first show at Emerson in December 2008. The turnout was flattering, and the response was more positive than we would have ever imagined. We've been riding on that high ever since, and believe me: it's not going to end there
