About Carl Schonbeck

Milan, Italy

Hello, thanks for coming by and hearing some of my music. My name is Carl Schonbeck and I'm your basic garden variety classic-retro-rock-twang-blues-kinda/sorta'd like to play jazz-guitarist-composer-singer-still waiting to get that call to do a tour with McCartney kinda guy. I'm originally from the Boston area but I've lived in Milan, Italy since 1990. I survive on a couple of day gigs that don't drive me too mad and play, write and record music whenever I can. Milan doesn't offer too much in the way of live gigging nowadays but I have a small home studio set up and I enjoy trying to get happening sounds out of it.
BACKGROUND: I started playing in blues bars around New England in the early 1980s and eventually began writing my own stuff. After I came to Milan I backed up some local singers, picked up a few new chords & licks and got married. All good moves. During the late '90s I wrote some things for Italian television, spent a lot of time on the road and composed for my then band. Eventually I got in touch with Scott Mathews (the producer) and he offered to produce a record for me. The result of that was "Tough Love" (2004) which was really a song-cycle about the ups & downs of living in Milan, ex-pat blues etc. It featured songs such as "Simona Surfs Nude", "Sponge" and "Amateur Night". Since then I've worked on getting a home studio together and I've now finished my new instrumental record "Voxpopped". In some ways this is a tribute to the many '60s/'70s instrumental bands that influenced me while learning to play guitar. It goes on sale 6 May at i-Tunes and the other online stores. I'm also hoping to get a surf record out there called "Surfs (Far) Away" by the summer. I like the idea of carrying a surfboard through downtown Milan. Hope you enjoy the material and looking forward to meeting y'all.
