BlackSmith is a hard rocking duo made up of Tom Smith on the classical guitar and vocals and Sarah Smith on the drums. For five years they have been playing together, forging a unique sound that frequently inspires comments about how full it is, despite them being a two-piece. Their full sound has been evolving over time and only in the last 6 months has it finally come to fruition. Its key ingredients are Tom’s style of playing the classical guitar and the unique, custom design of the guitar itself.
His style is 22 years in the making. It began when he was 16 and he had taught himself to play along with the likes of James Hetfield and Jimmy Page. During the ensuing years of exacting his teenage angst on thirsty, rocking audiences, he was also listening to Paco de Lucia and the guitar trio. His passion for playing rock music continued until about age 20, when he teamed up with Jeff Maahs and for the next ten years played in a classical, flamenco guitar duo known as the Kind.
In late 2004 Sarah finally picked up the sticks and discovered she had a knack for the drums. Tom showed her some basics and they started to put beats to some songs he’d been writing and BlackSmith they became.
Carl Hamilton, of Hamilton Guitars, built the”Classical Smith” custom guitar that Tom plays. It made its debut performance at the end of March 2009 and the band has been gathering momentum ever since.
After realizing how full the guitar’s live sound was, BlackSmith immediately set about recording their debut album ‘Camel Clutch’ set to be released in November 2009.
