About Amy Crawford

Brooklyn, NY

She's only been a songwriter for a year, but already 24-year-old Amy Crawford has created a catalog of songs that have been attracting the attention of critics and audiences from coast-to-coast. A former jazz pianist turned singer (she was performing at jazz festivals in Europe by age 17), Amy always had a love of classic American Song. After singing and playing piano in New York City clubs for a few years, she decided to revisit the music of her childhood – classic bands and singer/songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s - and spent a summer writing madly in an unfurnished Brooklyn apartment.

While in New York, Amy expanded her musical community to include filmmakers (see Lucas McNelly's "Gravida" featured in the MySpace NOW Film Festival) and choreographers. In 2007 she helped coach the Brooklyn Youth Chorus' performance at Elton John's sold out Madison Square Garden 60th Birthday Celebration and also helped the chorus prepare parts for a guest spot on Talib Kweli's new album, "Eardrum" and for Alicia Keys' appearance on a Sesame Street holiday special, among other events.

Recently, she placed 3rd in the renowned Shure/Montreux international Jazz Vocal Competition. She also spent time opening for Gogol Bordello, Ozomatli (since then, she's been co-writing with Ozo's Raul Pacheco), Os Mutantes and Mike Gordon while recording her debut EP. Her song "Oh, Blackbird" has received airplay on college radio and also shot up to the top 5 on The Sixty One within three days of being posted on the site.

Her sound is undeniably catchy but at the same time, wistful – with influences that include The Beatles, Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Jon Brion – and polished with a vintage sheen that makes Amy one of the freshest new songwriters on the scene.
