Born from the warm Atlantic waters of Haulover Beach, two young men shared a musical vision and a locker combination. Vocalist, Alex Corrales and guitarist Zack Smith began arranging the puzzle that is now Haulover Drive. In the wake of a few unsuccessful groups, Alex and Zack collected what valuable knowledge they could and continued forward. For many months, the two wrote some of HD's earliest c
ompositions, mostly in Zack's VW Golf known as "The Roach" (RIP). Things quickly began taking shape with the addition of guitarist David Abad, who had seen his share of troubled musical beginnings. The trio cycled through countless members, some only sharing the stage with them for a few months.. that was of course until they met bassist Mark Martinez, the newest, yet versatile member of the band. His experience with audio recording, video editing and graphic design made him a great asset to the bands growing network of fans. "Good/dedicated musicians are hard to find these days" said Alex, "Too many ego-driven kids with bigger heads than hearts". "Music is about passion and self expression, not glory" stated Zack. After only days with the gang, you can see a sophisticated group of musicians boiling under the surface; a surface of witty come-backs and inside jokes they will gladly bring you in on. You gotta love these guys! Give them a listen and keep your eyes peeled.. It's inevitable!

Because the sisters, who returned again to fill one of the thankless opening slots on Thursday at this year’s fest, have evolved impressively in 12 months. The South Florida duo arrived this time with more assurance on stage and accompanied by a better band, with drums and some electric guitar to add welcome muscle to the folkish vibe. For a meager crowd in the 7 p.m. slot at the Social (told you it was thankless), the Barons shifted from twangy country into evocative ballads and even an uplifting tune featuring ukulele. They managed to pull off an Amy Winehouse cover (“Rehab”) with surprising ease. The duo has an album due for summer release and Thursday’s showcase heightened my anticipation. It was also a slow build in Wall Street Plaza, where another South Florida act, Miami-based pop-punk band Haulover Drive, worked hard to engage the 50 or so people in front of the stage for its early performance. Lead singer Alex Corrales was shameless, in a fairly charming way, as he enticed potential fans to come closer to the stage: “Would it help if I offered you a free CD?” he asked. (Turns out that it didn’t help much.) “I’ll pose for a picture,” he said. “I’m not that big yet!” On the plus side, the band’s energetic anthems were a good fit for the plaza’s would-be party vibe. And, yeah, the party eventually materialized. An earlier threat of rain didn’t scare away too much of the Thursday party crowd and the outdoor space was packed by the time Southern California reggae-rockers the Dirty Heads unleashed the band’s Sublime-like groove. The band’s closing set was introduced by the hip-hop flavored rock of Atlanta’s Almost Kings, a band that was formidable in its own right. In the clubs, an assortment of hometown acts were on display: At BackBooth, Orlando’s Coyote Theory showcased keyboard-powered pop that mingled whiffs of Beach Boys innocence with sweet melodies often anchored by propulsive, dance-worthy beats. There also was a dancing bear! At least, I think it was a bear; it was hard to tell in the darkened club. Back at the Social, Orlando’s Rug previewed songs off its upcoming album, due on May 12. The new material shows that the band isn’t as prone to free-wheeling excursions as it once was. In songs such as the lovely “‘61,” frontman Jonathan Messeroff and his mates harness the band’s musicianship in the service of more compact, well-crafted compositions. A good move. There was plenty of jamming in the raucous performance by the Legendary JC’s, which closed the night at the Social. The current incarnation of the revered Orlando R&B outfit is more of a funk jam-band than a unit that devotes itself to structured songs. Still, frontman Eugene Snowden is charismatic as ever and the musicians on Thursday — an ensemble that included a 3-piece horn section led by JC’s fixture Clay Watson — was a formidable powerhouse. “So are you having a good Thursday?” Snowden asked. The Town of Miami Lakes and its Youth Activities Task Force will host Miami Lakes ROCKS!, the town's second annual band festival being held at the Miami Lakes Optimist Park. From classic rock to reggae, Miami Lakes ROCKS! will showcase music from a handful of genres Saturday, with performers ranging from middle schoolers to young adults. We are trying to help these kids promote their music, and have fun while they are doing it," said Lynn Matos, youth task force chairwoman. This festival allows the groups "to express themselves, be creative, put their feelings into their music." Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi, who was out of the country for last year's inaugural concert, put this Saturday's event on his calendar a year in advance. I get to forget about the budget cuts. I get to relax and chill out," said Pizzi. We get to work hard and play hard, forget about politics and elections." The event's 10 bands and musicians are mostly Miami Lakes locals, including last year's opening act, Haulover Drive. The Youth Activities Task Force spotted the band at last year's Relay for Life. Since then, Haulover Drive has drawn fans in a community that is "not a huge market for a rock band," said Alex Corrales, lead singer and Barbara Goleman High graduate. The other band members, Zack Smith and David Abad on guitar, bass player Sean Acosta, and drummer Raymond Leon also grew up in the Hialeah-Miami Lakes area. "The fact that we had great fans last year makes me excited for what it will look like this year." Nowadays, there aren't many musicians that share our musical influences," said Rob Alfonso, a bass player for Live Suicide. In June, 10 bands from the Miami area put together Miami Lakes Rocks, which has jump-started success for some. The show grew from an idea by Jonathan Benitez, a volunteer with the town's Youth Activities Task Force. Benitez approached the town council. It raised awareness in Miami Lakes about rock music to the point where we have budgeted two more band events," said Lynn Matos, task force chairwoman. Live Suicide and Haulover Drive, another Miami Lakes band, were judged best in the contest. Both groups were invited to play at the town's Fourth of July show. We found an investor to invest in our band, which is a great opportunity for anyone and might not have happened without the Miami Lakes Rocks show," said Alex Corrales, lead singer of Haulover Drive. The musical journey since then has not been easy. We practice every night; we've played empty bars and we've had bad time slots, but we've managed to build a fan base quickly despite that," Alfonso said. I'm really behind on getting anything done--which is especially distressing considering that I'm on an extended vacation without work getting in the way of life. Kids are sucking up all of my time, good for them that they are cute and kind of worth it. Today, I got a tweet from a Haulover Drive fan asking us to check out their video. I was in the perfect mood for hearing them, so here we are. The guys are from Miami and classify themselves as a mix of pop, rock, and punk. Maybe it's my state of mind today, but they definitely remind me of a band from the late 90s to early 00s, which is a good thing. Maybe Blink-182-ish? Click 5? No matter, they are themselves, so check 'em out and see what you think. I'm really behind on getting anything done--which is especially distressing considering that I'm on an extended vacation without work getting in the way of life. Kids are sucking up all of my time, good for them that they are cute and kind of worth it. Today, I got a tweet from a Haulover Drive fan asking us to check out their video. I was in the perfect mood for hearing them, so here we are. The guys are from Miami and classify themselves as a mix of pop, rock, and punk. Maybe it's my state of mind today, but they definitely remind me of a band from the late 90s to early 00s, which is a good thing. Maybe Blink-182-ish? Click 5? Among a crowd dominated by males, I was surprised that the first thing on my list was a surprisingly quick find. A chance walk into Fat Cats, the “smaller stage of Revolution's battle of the bands on Himmarshee Street, revealed Dark Around the Edges -- a Christian experimental band from Miami-Dade County. The charming band’s demeanor and music could best be summed up by the playful stick-on mustache of its drummer, Davin Sosa. Lead vocalist Sean Smith put it best when he said, “We're just here to spread good vibes. And that they did with the help of guest vocalist Diva Hurtado, a little girl with a big voice. Invited by Smith to perform at Revolution's Next Big Thing for the power of her voice, Hurtado added something extra to the already charismatic band, resulting in a fun, lighthearted performance. I was in for a huge surprise during the next stop on my list. I found a candidate in an exceptional progressive rock band called Inside the Mind Of, a five-piece group (including keyboard) from Key West. Signed up to play the gig by some friends at Warped Tour last summer, the guys were more than stoked to make the 4- hour trip to perform at the event. The surprise was that a band, which looked flawless on stage and was so thoughtful and well-spoken, was actually a group of very young guys. Guitarist Javier Soltero-Brown is a senior at Coral Shores High in Key West, but keyboard player “Ish Sandoval is only a freshman, and another guitarist, Ryan Raines, is only in 8th grade. They put on an exceptional show, infusing elements of countless genres of rock in their performance. “We're raising the standard for the way conventional instruments are played, Soltero-Brown said, “the music we play could easily be performed by an orchestra. It didn't take much to spot the last band on my list. Haulover Drive stood out before they played the first note. From the group of fans that amassed at their stage call, to the iridescent lights spelling “HD on their monitors and the glow sticks they tossed out, the band was a hit. The Hialeah-Miami Lakes High grads “make music that people can relate to and have a good time, said guitarist David Abad, and from start to finish, nobody on the floor held still. Whether they were trying to get their hands on the giant inflatable killer whale vocalist Alex Corrales tossed off stage, or just moved by the pop/punk music, the crowd was infected with HD's up-tempo vibe. Abad swears it's this attitude that will get them their dream of “opening for the Jonas Brothers ... or Manson. Hopefully the Next Big Thing in South Florida is a new and positive attitude toward rising young talent. It's out there, it's clean-shaven, and it sounds good. I saw it.
