In an age of electro-pop, over-produced, indie rock, Twin Berlin rebels against the passing fad to bring the revival of no-frills, in-your-face rock and roll. And 2012 is about to be their year.
In 2009, Twin Berlin was recognized by MTV, being nominated as the Best Breakout Boston band and playing a show on the 2009 VMA tour alongside All Time Low and The White Tie Affair. Consequently, Twin Berlin was launched into Comcast’s “On Demand” air time, and into rotation on Boston’s biggest indie/alternative radio station, WFNX. Just two months later, Twin Berlin conquered the Big Apple for the CMJ Music Marathon.
By 2010, Twin Berlin had broken out against the conventional indie-dance circuit, earning a reputation for a rabid, powerful live show. Garnering attention from the local press, Boston Music Spotlight named Twin Berlin as one of the eleven bands to watch for in 2011. They couldn’t have been any closer to the truth.
While recording new material in the studio this year, Mikey Welsh, formerly of the band Weezer, stepped in to create the cover art. When asked about the band in an interview, Welsh responded, “they’re young, they’re good-looking…they craft really good songs.” But, before the recordings could even be finished, Travis Barker of Blink-182 became involved and selected Twin Berlin as the winner of Guitar Center’s “Your Next Record”, inviting them to record with him in Los Angeles.

Twin Berlin’s two songs “Fake It Well” and “Pretty From The Window” are tightly played and super catchy. You would think that these guys have been doing this for years after hearing how well they play, when in fact they are young. It consists of two singles, something that in times gone by could be seen as a double A-side. The single, or EP if you will, starts with the promising Pretty From the Window. It has some punk and new wave influences and heavily leans on the indie riffs that are currently very popular in the UK. Bands like Kaiser Chiefs, Libertines, Kooks, Franz Ferdinand and countless other bands are having great succes with it, and it's only slowly crossing over the big pond. Bands like The Craze are having minor successes with a similar approach and I wonder why these American bands have such a hard time breaking through with the same success formula. But from what we hear, Twin Berlin seems to have what it takes to take this formula to a higher platform within the US. Pretty From the Window with its catchiness and powerful, energetic guitar playing and steady beat is bound to get some heavy rotation on local and even national radio stations as the song sticks with you and provides joy for those who want to rock out as well for those who want to bust a move. Fake It Well has some of the same influences as its basis, but also reminds me of bands like The Cars who were a dominant force in the late 70s and early 80s. There seems to be a revival of the sound from that era and with Fake It Well, Twin Berlin feels like they are in their groove. They play this song convincingly and the arrangement is strong enough to draw you in more and more as the song goes on. And with each listen, the song gets a little better. It's a good comfort zone to be in, and Twin Berlin definitely makes the most of it. The "Twin Single", recently released, is to hold us over until the band's debut album drops later this year. And if the single is any indication, the album will be released to an already established fanbase and will most likely garner raving reviews and postive critiques from press and music fans alike. Twin Berlin is a newcomer, but they are definitely a band you want to keep an eye out for.

Twin Berlin rules my face; Aug 21 @ The Pill by Vanyaland
Last Thursday I was sitting on a Media 101 panel at District Lounge, and one of the topics was "how to get the press to cover my band/event/whatever?" My reply was simple: "Be awesome." As I've stated in the past, I listen to every CD I get sent to my desk at the Herald, and it doesn't matter how fancy-pants expensive and shiny your kit is. All that matters is that your music intrigues. Case in point: NYC garage rock boys Twin Berlin, who sent me their twin-single deftly wrapped in Connecticut newspaper. I put it in, and it floored me. Now they're playing the pill on Aug. 21 (ironic, though, since now I can't write about the gig -- but certainly others will). Both songs are lethal. "Pretty From The Window" has a fierce Libertines guitar-led dance romp (as well as a great song title) and "Fake It Well" is a super-cool Stroke-paced ballad with equally keen lyrical play and melodic drift. Been loving these guys all week, and it all started with a burned CD wrapped in Waterbury classified ads. Again, want to be noticed? Be great.

Travis Barker Gives Twin Berlin An 'Incredible' Op by Matt Elias, MTV
Blink-182's Travis Barker is giving a boost to Boston rock trio Twin Berlin's EP release Wednesday (February 1). The veteran drummer handpicked the unsigned band out of a sea of submissions for Guitar Center's "Your Next Record" contest. As part of the grand prize, Twin Berlin got to record a three-song EP produced by Barker himself, resulting in There Goes My Virtue. MTV News caught up with Barker and the band back in November, when they were tinkering away at Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles. Although he's a percussionist at heart, Barker said he wasn't just looking for the next great drummer. There were some bands in the Guitar Center contest that were amazing drummers, but it was more a song thing for [Twin Berlin] — a great song," Barker said. "They seem hungry, and they all have great personalities and attitudes about the whole thing. I just wanted to help emphasize what they were already doing and clean things up, maybe suggest arrangement ideas, just little things that will make a difference." For Twin Berlin, the contest was a natural fit. [Bassist] Sean is a huge Blink fan and everything, and we all really like Travis a lot," drummer James Janocha said. "So we just figured, 'Hey, why not enter?' " Barker recalled, "When they gave me all the bands' songs, I didn't know what the bands' names were, I didn't know what the guys looked like, I didn't know how many people were in the group — it was purely based on one song, and that one song just won me over. I listened to the CD probably every day for three weeks, and that song just resonated with me." The song Barker refers to, "Can't Take, Take, Take," ended up as the first track on the new EP, rounded out by "Don't Hang Around" and "Give Up on Me." While the trifecta of songs represents Twin Berlin's gritty, unapologetic style of rock and roll, the recording process was far from their familiar DIY surroundings. To get the chance to be able to work in a studio like this, it's incredible," guitarist/vocalist Matt Lopez said. "We used to record in this guy's shed, so this is pretty insane.

Hailing from Boston via Connecticut (I guess we could’ve said New England but we’re not Pats fans), the garage rock trio formed in 2009. If you listen to WFNX (great alternative rock station btw) up in Boston, you already know how great this band is and you’ve probably seen them countless times. We were introduced to the band after they won Guitar Center’s “Your Next Record” competition where they were personally selected as the winners by the one and only, Travis Barker. Twin Berlin is the best unknown band I’ve heard this year. They have a garage rock style that mixes the Strokes with a slightly more pop-oriented mentality, and they aren’t afraid to give it their all. By “give it their all,” I mean they aren’t afraid to quote unquote rock. Their songs have energy, catchiness, and balls. All of these were very scarce in 2010, what with the mellow direction independent music has taken in the last few years. I really am thankful for this band, and I’m sure they’ll get the fame they deserve soon enough. (Did I mention they’re super nice guys, too?)

Rock out to a familiar sound, close to home by My Secret Boston
FROM THE CHOPPED-UP GUITAR RIFFS AND POST-PUNK RHYTHMS TO lead singer Matt Lopez’s intercom-like vocal inflections, Twin Berlin sounds exactly like the Strokes. But the Strokes were really cool, right? So the secret here is, they provide a pretty great deal to Bostonians who want to rock out in a local bar instead of sitting in a crowded arena. Twin Berlin’s familiar, super-sharp sound managed to attract a crowd even while rehearsing with the windows open in a second-story Brighton Avenue apartment. Why not come see what the fuss is about?

If you haven’t heard of Twin Berlin, it’s time you, reader, took a listen. Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, this quintet of excellent musicians have been putting out some serious garage rock that will make you want to kick your friend’s teeth in (but only in the best of ways). Twin Berlin consists of Matt Lopez (Vocals, Guitar), James Janocha (Drums), Sean O’Neil (Bass), and Chris Auger (Lead Guitar). Twin Berlin’s driving neo-punk rock is reminiscent of Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” The Strokes’ “Is This It?” and other similar bands during the 90’s and after, but Twin Berlin takes their sound to a whole new level with an almost ‘under-produced’ sound and garage-punk riffs that are spot on. Just one of their new songs, steeped in 90′s nostalgia, here’s “Don’t Hang Around.” In 2009, Twin Berlin was recognized by MTV, being nominated as the Best Breakout Boston band and playing a show on the 2009 VMA tour alongside All Time Low and The White Tie Affair. Consequently, Twin Berlin was launched into Comcast’s “On Demand” air-time, and into rotation on Boston’s biggest indie/alternative radio station, WFNX. Just two months later, Twin Berlin conquered the Big Apple, as well, for the CMJ Music Marathon. By 2010, Twin Berlin had broken out against the conventional indie-dance circuit, earning a reputation for a rabid, powerful live show. Garnering attention from the local press, Boston Music Spotlight named Twin Berlin as one of the eleven bands to watch for in 2011. They couldn’t have been any closer to the truth. While recording new material in the studio this year, Mikey Welsh, formerly of the band Weezer, stepped in to create the cover art. When asked about the band in an interview, Welsh responded, “they’re young, they’re good-looking…they craft really good songs.” But, before the recordings could even be finished, Travis Barker of Blink-182 became involved and selected Twin Berlin as the winner of Guitar Center’s “Your Next Record”, inviting them to record with him in Los Angeles, and even offering to play along on their new single. If it isn’t already obvious that these dudes are on the right track, just take a listen to one of their songs. Twin Berlin has been turning heads in the music industry for the past several years. The reason why they are ahead of the pack (so to speak) is because of their incredible song writing abilities and their progressive style. From the moment they took the stage, the crowd was up and dancing, with Twin Berlin playing with passion and energy. Their studio recordings, especially their first couple of efforts, show off a heavy Strokes influence, with lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Matt Lopez sounding almost like a dead ringer for Julian Casablancas. The songs are quite memorable, with a tightly constructed feel to them. In concert, the Strokes influence is not as strong and they play with more of a raw, garage-rock feel. They killed with every song, including a great cover of Billy Idol’s classic 80s hit “Rebel Yell,” that I think would have made him proud. There Goes My Virtue is the second EP by garage-rock band Twin Berlin, aiming to inject rock and roll back into music after its prolonged hibernation. Fans from have flooded in for their maniacal live shows in the Boston Underground. This is hardly surprising: There Goes My Virtue exhibits Twin Berlin’s cutting-edge emergence into the music scene. Their exuberance gives Twin Berlin a summery lilt, not dissimilar to that of The Libertines through the debauched vitality of their guitar riffs. The EP opens with Can’t Take, Take, Take, a jigsaw of screeching electric guitars and a raging drum backing provided by their producer Travis Barker (drummer from pop-punk band Blink-182). Lead singer Matt Lopez echoes a younger, slightly brasher Casablancas that interlocks with the track consummately. Out of Take emanates Don’t Hang Around, a frenzied stereotype of basement rock. The homemade music video enforces this with the camera swinging furiously to the vibrant guitar solos. Give Up On Me is the last song on the EP, coating it with a brazen veneer from the rabid solos throughout the song. It is my personal favourite from There Goes My Virtue for it’s nostalgic feel and sanguine riffs.

And the staircase appears to be on fire, yet they continue upwards, towing us by the wrist up into the inferno that is “Can’t Take, Take, Take.” There’s no real danger here – we’re not going to get toasted (in a bad way, of course), but the singeing experience will only serve to make us pleasantly crispy – like this track itself. The guitar seems like a wild, hair-on-fire run through walls and whatnot, yet it reveals a certain sense of dexterity upon closer examination. The track is even-handed in its out-of-handedness, with sure pick-strokes and concise rhythms. That doesn’t detract from the energy level at all; the song’s needle remains pinned in the red. Like a well-crafted series of tiny explosions, Twin Berlin seems at the same time fully dangerous and fully trustworthy. Twin Berlin’s sense of style is impeccable, displaying a timeless sense of effortless cool, like someone whose collar just keeps popping up naturally. Their sound is a dashing one, roguishly dirty and ridiculously vibrant. The symphony of guitars in the mix are this song’s meat and potatoes, from the high-speed chugging of the rhythm guitars to the winding leads to the the languid chord drags at the end of the occasional measure, Twin Berlin uses some untold multiple of six-strings to keep this song’s attack potent
