The Wonder Mikes Please by Lightfoot Kingsbeard
Amidst mountains of coats on plywood covered pool tables, were fans packed in to witness the wonder of The Wonder Mikes. It had been far too long since their last show in October, a time which they had spent remodeling, honing their skills, writing new songs, and performing team building exercises. Friday night at Church, The Wonder Mikes displayed that their hard work had not been in vain, which was clear as soon as the music commenced. The band came out on fire; the temperature in the building started to rise, and those mountains of coats grew a little bit higher. The Wonder Mikes are a festive, effervescent, soul, funk, R&B band with a hip hop twist similar to Bad Rabbits. Putting a label on this band, however, is unnecessary considering how diverse they are. On Friday night, they covered artists ranging from Dr. Dre to Bill Withers to Freddy Hubbard. Freddy Hubbard’s “Red Clay” was performed with twins, Aaron and Seth Hachen, joining The Wonder Mikes on tenor sax and flute, respectively. I’m getting ahead of myself. Before I do any more name dropping it is imperative I delve into the Mike part of The Wonder Mikes. There are two front men in this group, and both of their names are Mike (surprise!). Tres (Mike) Myers is the first of the two, the rapper of the group who spits poignant lyrics contained in an electric flow. Myers has a larger than life persona and emits ample amounts of energy. When Tres isn’t inches away from dislodging ceiling tiles because of his enthusiastic bounding, he’s about as close to the crowd as one can get before it technically becomes crowd surfing. Michael Charles Naugler, the other front man, exudes more of a quiet confidence. Though his confidence is quiet, his voice is not. It is his big voice that projects so well it would have a microphone feeling useless. His delivery has the power of Howlin’ Wolf, the emotional soul of Wilson Pickett, and the angelic timbre of Stevie Wonder. What more could you possibly ask from a soul singer? Before Friday night, I had only heard Jon Jaffee, The Wonder Mike’s guitarist, play acoustic before. I was very pleased to learn that he rocks an electric just as well, if not better. With a lead-footed approach to his wah pedal, Jaffee really funked up the set. Jon’s Amos Lee like vocals added warm and sensual tones, especially on his own “Crawl on Back” which is still rattling around in my skull several days later. Nathaniel Lanier, the bassist of the group, added an almost psychedelic twist to the funk with ambitious and melodic bass lines that could still sit back on the groove with Jason Curry’s spicy drumming (I had to do it). This was particularly evident on the band’s original, sexually syncopated tune “Need.” Accompanying The Wonder Mikes on keys for this ditty was Nick Garbian, who also sat in, along with trombonist Matt Finstein, on the whimsical “Shoe Shoppin.” When The Wonder Mikes stepped off stage, the masses were desperately in need of showers after all the sweaty dancing we were persuaded to do. Woooo, it got hot in there! And when I stepped outside after the show for what seemed like an after-sex cigarette, the night’s cold air wrapped around my skinny frame and gave me goose bumps. Or maybe it wasn’t the cold air…Didn’t get to see The Wonder Mikes this time around? Well, wipe you weeping eyes; they’re coming back for more on March 3rd at the Middle East Upstairs. I’ll be there, stuffing my face with grape leaves, drinking PBRs and dancing my frickin fanny off. I’ll probably end up regretting the grape leaves and the drinking. I won’t regret catching The Wonder Mikes show.

Boston-area fivesome The WonderMics are cultivating a sound anyone can enjoy - working towards striking a balance between funk, soul, pop, and hip hop. "Crawl Back" is an initial offering from their latest project The WonderMics EP, which starts off with an easy couple minutes before the homie Tres rips off a few sentimental bars. espite the wintery weather of Boston, all were in attendance to be blessed by the presence of The Wonder Mikes. This funky blend of R&B and soul are new to the Boston music scene, but are making their presence known. Lead singer Mike Charles fronts the band with his powerful soul singing. He stands along side Tres Myers who brings a whole new sound to soul music, mixing in a hip-hop influence. This band’s sound is so diverse it is hard to categorize into a genre. They offer the best of funk and soul with a twist of urban hip-hop. Add some innovation, chew it up, spit it out, and you have The Wonder Mikes. As a whole, this band offers the whole package. The Wonder Mikes hit the stage at the club Church in Boston with a packed house. They immediately began killin’ it with their stylishly funky beats. On that Friday night they covered a variety of artists from Dr. Dre to Freddy Hubbard’s “Red Clay”. This song was accompanied by tenor sax and flute, which were played by Aaron and Seth Hatchen. Both were great run offs of the originals but still paid respect to the respective artists. The band also played a number of original songs that blew even the covers they played out of the water. One song in particular called “Shoe Shopping” was a huge crowd pleaser. This high-energy jam had the whole room dancing right after the first beat dropped. Little did I know this was only the beginning. Every song left the crowd begging for more, and The Wonder Mikes did not disappoint. The backbone of The Wonder Mikes lies in the rhythm section. Guitarist Jon Jaffee tastefully added a wah peddle on a number of tunes giving the band a real dirty funk feel. Featured on keys was Nick Garbian who definitely added an impressive sound to the group. Combine this with the beats of Jason Curry on drums and the funky bass lines from Nathaniel Lanier and you get a purely electrifying sound. A sound so catchy it’ll be stuck in your head for days. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect when I walked in to watch the show. To that night no one was able to describe to me exactly what kind of music to expect. Turns out it didn’t matter. It was it was great, and left me wanting more. For me this is all I look for when I go to see live music. If you ever get a chance to check out The Wonder Mikes live do not miss your chance. Crawl Back by WonderMics Wondermics Go!!! This is the title of the first track off of The WonderMics first EP which shall be released Friday at The Magic Room Gallery in Brighton. It’s been a long time coming. I have been into this group for a while now and listening to youtube sound quality just doesn’t cut it anymore. The EP has 5 tracks, each one is stellar, and if you don’t want to take my word for it, download their single “Crawl Back” for free. Doors are at 8 for the EP release party. If you haven’t been to The Magic Room Gallery yet I highly suggest you check it out, it’s one of my favorite venues in the Brighton/Allston area (155 North Beacon St.). Also being featured this night is Ian Sanity, who will be doing live art, Nicole D'Amico and Friends, and the reggae band The Hub Dub. I’ve never been disappointed by The WonderMics, and even with my high expectations for Friday night’s show, I believe that trend will continue. Show up and get down! WonderMics Go!!!
