Gato + the Palenke Music Co. is a 7 member band, whose distinctive and unique sound has been created and polished during 6 intense years of live performances in bars, festivals and parties. This ensemble of three Peruvians, one Salvadorian, one Paraguayan, and two Colombians has a new musical proposal inspired by the musicians diverse background and influences. During the first two years, the band played other artists’ famous songs, a formula that worked for a while, but that changed once the band’s sound was defined and when the vocalist, composer, guitarist, producer and director of the band, Jaime Andrés Salazar, began writing new songs. In February 2008, after a year and a half in production, “La Situación”, the band’s first album-CD was released. This first album is comprised by 12 original songs, each of which is an elaborated blend of diverse Latin American rythms, such as salsa, merengue, seis chorreado, festejo, bomba, cumbia, merecumbe, punta, gaita and others such as blues and reggae. These enjoyful, danceable rhythms are combined with sincere, heart felt lyrics, creating a new and exciting musical proposal. One of the main objectives set by the director during this first production, was the need to maintain the band’s strong energy in live performances as the essence of the recording project. To do this, the songs in the album are inspired by the rhythms that were played live and given the band’s touch in the studio in what the musicians call ‘rhythm labs’, where they built on the rhythms, mixed and re-arranged them to create a unique, distinctive sound. Strings and percussion are the only family of instruments relied on throughout the album. There are 3 guitars, including a 6-strings steal accustic a 12 strings steal accustic and an electric guitar. The guitars and strings were a journey of sounds and effects, bringing elements from rock and Latin Folklore. So in essence what we created was a sound that has a danceable, up-beat rhythm with folk and rock guitar sounds. After many hours of work, the sound was clearer and the identity of each song had the group’s personality. I began sending our work to Kinacho, which he enjoyed and started to give me advice on the recording and production of the songs. It has been over a year since we began this project and I have, I should say, we have great faith in it because we know how much time and dedication we put into it. I want to thank all of those who believe in this project, for supporting and helping us share this proposal, I hope you enjoy it, que se la rumbeen!. To those ill-intentioned few that continue to illegally download music, I ask you to think it over and become part of the society that supports the future, the arts and peace. The some that present both a musical fusion and the sentiment of many who come from far away in search of new opportunities, such as “Sangre de Emigrante” (Emigrant Blood), “LAtino BLUes”, “La Olla Rota” (The Broken Pot), “La Situación” (The Situation), “Echa para allá” (Step Aside), and “Oiga Señor Presidente” (Listen Mr. President). There are also percussion ‘descargas’ that literally make you dance, such as “El Cucupá” and “El Incendio” (The Inferno), and some that sing of lost or new love, like “Honey”, “Sol en G” and “La mentira y la vanidad” (Lies and vanity). and that has released a first album-CD “La Situación”, a project filled by the sound of the band, a sound that was created during the nights …. This mixture of cultures, dances and rhythms are mutually complementary and the sounds evolve, generating musical fusions ranging from Our, personified by a group of is spreading innovative, original, but very Latin rhythms in the Washington DC area. Beyond great music, the energy created on stage is contagious and our “flavor” undeniable. This energy is accompanied by the message of our songs, which speak of love, loneliness, the desire to party and of what it feels to be an immigrant. This sincere message and our complex rhythms are the basis of the attraction of any Latin- American to the music of Gato + the Palenke Music Co. After 6 years playing in local gigs, and Gato. Strathmore Commissioned New Song Debuts Oct. 22 N. Bethesda, MD: On October 1 and 22, 2008, Colombian guitarist and singer-songwriter Jaime A. Salazar leads the Latin band, Gato + The Palenke Music Co. in the Mansion at Strathmore. On Oct. 22 Jaime debuts a new song commissioned by Strathmore. The members of Gato + The Palenke Music Co. come from different countries in Latin America: Peru, El Salvador, Colombia and Nicaragua. The diversity of the group is reflected in their high-energy music, which is an elaborate blend of Latin American rhythms, such as salsa, merengue, seis chorreado, festejo, bomba, cumbia, merecumbé, punta, gaita and other contemporary genres such as rock, blues and reggae. Jaime grew up in Colombia and came to the United States when he was 12 years old. His music reflects the modern Latin-American experience . His heart felt lyrics are about waiting and longing, reconciliation and the hope of an immigrant. Gato + The Palenke Music Co. band members include: Jamie A. Salazar (Peru) vocalist, composer, guitarist, producer and director; Luίs Cadenas (Peru) 12 string guitar; Nelson Álvarez (El Salvador) timbales, tambora, guira and percussion; Wilder Benίtez (Colombia) bongos, percussion; and Amilkar Cruz (Nicaragua) electric guitar. Their new album, “La Situación”, is Latino Tropical fusion. It features brand new sounds and rhythms designed to pay homage to Latin America’s culture and keep America dancing. About the Artist in Residence Program This is the fourth season of Strathmore’s Artist in Residence program. AIR continues its mission of promoting up-and-coming Washington-area musicians and fostering collaborations between these musicians in a diversity of genres. In 2005, Strathmore introduced its Artist in Residence program, an initiative to help cultivate local musical talent in the Washington, D.C. area by connecting established performers with up-and-coming musicians. Emerging artists perform in residence in the Mansion at Strathmore for the duration of one month. During this month, the artist in residence presents two public performances. The artists have the opportunity to develop an audience in the area, perfect their performance, create an educational program and premiere a new work commissioned by Strathmore. Salazar ha sido nominada por WAMA ( Washington Area Music Asociación / Asociación de Musicos de la Ciudad de Washington, D.C.). Organización que reconoce los logros musicales de los artistas locales cada año a través de sus premios “WAMMIE”. Las nominaciones y premios son otorgados por los miembros de comunidad artística de la ciudad, que en su edición numero 23 se llevara acabo el día Domingo,15 de Febrero en Falls Church, Virginia, Estados Unidos. Con tres nominaciones como; Mejor Agrupación Latina, Mejor Grabación Latina y Álbum Debut por su primera producción llamada “La Situación”, lanzada en Marzo del 2008.
