Trio West is a New York City based piano trio. The band has existed in one line up or another since 1998, the common thread being the drummer and leader Tobias Gebb and his original arrangements and compositions.
Tobias grew up on the west side of Manhattan, thus, the name Trio West. He started playing violin at the age of 6, switched to piano when he was 8, studied piano for 6 years and then finally landed behind the drum set at the age of 16. He then received his Bachelors degree in composition from Berklee College of Music and his Masters degree from Manhattan School of Music. He soon began a successfull collaboration with noted Brazilian percusionist Mauro Refosco(David Byrne, Jon Lurie) and Micheal Leonhart(trumpeter and arranger with Steely Dan) to form the band Skizm. Skizm became an instant success in NYC, filling up clubs where ever they played. The band recorded and toured and went on to win the 1996 Grammy competition. Tobias has also worked with the infamous producer Phil Ramone(Frank Sinatra, John Coltrane, Getz/Gilberto, Paul Simon, Billy Joel , Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, etc), engineer-producer Terry Manning(Led Zeppelin, AC DC, ZZ Top), Donald Fegan of Steely Dan, Lenny Kravits, and producer-engineer Patrick Dillet(Queen Latifa, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Arto Lindsay, B-52’s). Tobias has also worked extensively as a local freelance musician with such singer/songwriters as Mike Errico(Verve), Methusela Jones, Blake Morgan(N2K), Coral(BMG), and Josh Dodus. He has performed with many jazz artists such as Cab Calloway, Smith Dobson, David Berkman, Art Baron, Peter Yellin, Walter Booker and Duane Burno among others. He also has appeared on numerous television and radio shows including, CBS, NBC, ABC, Much Music, MTV Europe, Univision(41), and NPR’s World Cafe with David Dye.
Trio West takes its influence from some of the great jazz artists of the 20th century including Ahmad Jamal, Duke Ellington, Red Garland, and Miles Davis. Particularly, Ahmad Jamal has had a strong influence on Trio West for his subtle usage of space, dynamics and inventive arrangements. The members of Trio West have worked extensively both nationally and internationally and have played with many of the top musicians on the NYC jazz scene. Some of these musicians include: Jon Hendricks, Jane Monheit, Arnie Lawrence, Chris Tarry, The Howard Williams Jazz Orchestra, Larry Goldings, and Al Harwood to name a few.
