Music is one of the most powerful drugs known to man. The late great King of Reggae, Bob Marley, said that when it hits, you feel no pain. Just like with any anesthetic. The difference is you do not have to pour it and drink it or roll it and smoke it. Just play it and that’s it… a Natural High.
So it was only right for teenage friends, Jordan 'Tall-Man' Armond, Daniel 'Maverick' Crooks and Blaise 'Binghi' Davis to name their production company Natural High Muzik. The trio, which focuses mainly on Hip Hop and Dancehall music, met at Ardenne High School in 2003 and connected through their love for music. They dabbled as sound system selectors in their early years but found their true calling when Maverick made his first beat and carried it to school. He shared his copy of Fruity Loops 3 with his friends and it was on from then.
The three budding producers practiced continually until they each developed their own ear and sound, which did not take long considering the musical influences in their families: - each being related to a legendary or contemporary musician. They brought their own production styles to the group, which in turn, allowed them to developed their own chemistry and create the unique brand that is Natural High Muzik.
Stephen ‘Cat’ Coore of veteran reggae group, Third World, eventually came across a compilation of their beats and was blown away. His positive reaction inspired the trio to continue developing their craft and pursue music production as a career. Since then, Natural High Muzik has been building its brand by doing collaborative work with labels, producers and artistes, both locally and internationally, in mainstream and underground circuits. Some of the artistes they have produced for include Teflon, Norris Man and Macka Diamond.
As important and as demanding as this education may be, Natural High Muzik sees no reason to take a break from what they do. They have remained on the grind and their production can be heard on a number of upcoming projects including an album from reggae group, Chalice; a mixtape from Florida-based Hip Hop group, Major League; and Jr Sky’s debut album, which the trio is producing in partnership with Multicast Entertainment. The production team also maintains a close relationship with recently founded Jamaican online record company, Jarcat Records.
Already producing for established artistes and currently working with promising upcoming talent, one can only expect big things from this young team. With a sound that defies the norm yet intrigues the listener; they are bound to keep you hooked. They cannot do any wrong as long as they keep getting you high.
