Mullins native's love of music sparks personal jou by By Naeem Mcfadden Editor
Mullins native Armon RaShad Bowens developed a passion for singing and song writing since the age of three. Some would say he was born to sing, especially with a family a background of four siblings all blessed with vocal ability. “I started singing around three or four. I started writing and performing around the age of 19,” Bowens said. The singer has embarked on his own path with a musical style that incorporates the genres of rhythm and blues, neo-soul and hip hop. So far he has been featured on more than 30 different tracks with several music artist and since a teenager, performed at dozens of events, including weddings, community gatherings, concerts and political functions. ” I’m always nervous before a performance it doesn’t really mater where or when. I guess the more prepared I am , the more comfortable if feel,” Bowens said of performing, which he does quite often. In December 2006, he was the lead performer at The Fort Hood Welcome Home Ceremony in Killeen, T.X. He was the spotlight artist at an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Red Carpet Event in addition to having two songs featured on DJ Vlad's worldwide release "Unsigned R&B Allstars." This past year alone, Bowens, going by the stage name A.R. has performed in two shows in his hometown, along with making guest appearances in Florence and Fayetteville, N.C. “Last year I was fortunate enough to share the stage with rapper Keith Murray in a performance. I’ve also had several internet experiences such as having two of my tracks featured on a worldwide mixtape release hosted by Dj Vlad. This year I have already had one of my songs chosen to be featured on the “Coast to Coast” mixtape. Heavily influence by his family, Bowens said his musical influences include Brian McKnight, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gay, Smokie Norful, Outkast and John Mayer. Motivated by a desire to change the lives of those he’s close, Bowens is also driven by the personal goal to become a successful singer and songwriter. The creative process of recording music is a journey itself. “I normally write to music, so I’m always listening to different original beats (instumentals) that I find on the internet or people send me. I may go through 20-30 beats a day before one inspires me to write. I’m big on timming so before I go to the studio I try to make sure that my timing is right to be able to maximize the time that I have to record,” he said. “To look back from when I started, I feel that I’ve grown a lot as a singer/songwriter and performer. I still know that I have a long way to go in this business.” Bowens has been working twice as hard to promote his work close to home. “I personally have gotten descent support from those in Marion County that have listened to my music. I think that there is a lot of talent in the area and we just need to support each other’s talents,” he said. As an artist, Bowens has a network with a number of people locally, nationally and internationally and has an idea on what’s needed in the area to help cultivate musical talent and ability to share that with the masses. “What I’ve noticed is that if you’re from Atlanta G.A., then Atlanta supports you no matter what. If you are from New York then New York has your back. I think we need that in our area,” he said. “Again I think that there is a lot of talent in the area, we just need to support each other not just in Marion county but in the Pee Dee area as a whole.” Bowens is married to Margaret L. Bowens and the couple has a three-year old son named Jalen R. Bowens. He’s the son of Jimmie and Verdell Bowens has four siblings, Toschia M. Young, Donzetta M.Faulk, Jimmie Bowens jr. and Latisha Bowens. Younger brother Jimmie is also a music artist going by the stage name Jaye and shares the same aspirations and ambition. The two also perform together as group and are working on several projects together. “My brother is the main person I go to about my music. He hears all of my songs before anyone does and gives me his honest opinion,” Bowens said, adding his brother has been right so farl. “He does more than share the same goals and aspiration as me, he shares my aspirations with me. He’s also a very talented singer/songwriter and musician as well , doing shows in Texas.”

Armon, a South Carolina Soul-Singer, began singing at the age of three in the church choir. For the past ten years, he has been refining his gift of writing. He keeps a tape recorder with him to record his thoughts that inspire him during his daily routine. “I am always writing, everyday I think of something.” Armon is capable of better expressing himself since he began writing lyrics. “My lyrics are more intricate now…conveying real life topics; music is not always about love… I want people to relate to my music.” His musical influences are KC & JoJo, Tank and Anthony Hamilton. “I appreciate Tank because he is a content writer like me,” Armon expresses. Although, Armon takes pride in the content of his music, he is also a writer of fantasy. Armon’s song Cognac Black is a fun piece which expressed his alter ego. “I see Cognac Black as an old 70’s movie.” This song has a southern-flair that Armon likes to call Southern-Soul music. Armon’s most memorable moment is finishing in the top ten of Andre Harrell's "Superstar Soul Search" in the Charlotte, NC region. When Armon is not working on his music, he is spending time with his family and studying to complete his MBA. Armon looks to his mother for inspiration who had dreams of a singing career that was delayed by the happenings of life but despite her setbacks, she continues to pursue a career in music. Armon lives by consistent writing, as he’s inspired by, “You’re only as good as your last cut, because what you’ve done is only hot for a minute, and you’ve got to keep it coming.” With the dedication that this talented artist puts forth, longevity will be with him in the music industry.
